Following the chicken buses of Guatemala the next big transportation invention are the colectivos.  They come in all sorts of shapes and sizes heading to all sorts of destination but always starting at one.

In Oaxaca they were non assuming four door sedans (when I asked how I would know which ones were colectivos I was told, the cars that don't say TAXI) being completely correct I found my colectivo.

In Cuautla they took the form of mini van type creatures with a great physics based pulley type system for the door.  Van slowed down door opened, people got on, Van sped up door closed.  Simple, speedy and cheap.

Cuernavaca was lacking colectivos but had a great cheap efficient buss system.

Valle de Bravo's took the form of taxis that just decided randomly when they would be a colectivo or not.  I would walk up to the sparkly white and green vehicle clearing stating TAXI and ask "colectivo?" and they would say yep and I would jump in or they would say no and point to another identical vehicle.

Mexico City has another name for them but same idea, they also look very much like those in Cuautla with paper signs scribbled as too where they are going stuck to the front window.  Simple, speedy and cheap the basic idea is to share your ride with a bunch of strangers packed in Guatemalan style (sort of) and get where you need to go.
