I'm back online, but not for long. I got up early this morning and headed to Manapouri. What's in Manapouri? Not much. Lake Manapouri is the starting point for trips to Doubtful Sound. I took the Real Journeys bus in and headed across Lake Manapouri, which was quite cold. Once on the ground we got on another bus to head over the mountains and into the fiords. About half an hour and a half hour's worth of cheesy scripted commentary, we arrived at the boat which would take us through the many arms of Doubtful Sound.

The cruise itself was probably two hours. We ran into two seperate groups of dolphins on this trip which apparently is uncommon. It was difficult to see them at first because it was so dark today. The easily blend in with the water. We made it out to the Tasman Sea, but it was too rough to venture out and try to spot some seals. No penguins either. The dolphins were good enough though. Some would ride right up against the side of the boat. The pictures (and video) will say more than I can I guess. Tomorrow on to Milford. Hopefully it rains.

A little note on the fiords. They have species of marine life only found in these areas. The water is so dark at the first 20 meters or so that you find deep sea life in the top layer of fresh water. The fresh water floats on top of the salt water which allows usually deep sea creatures to thrive in shallow depths.

oh yeah, I did the Glow Worms yesterday. I got soaked on the top of the boat. It was nothing great I guess. Doesn't last long. I really wanted to hike up to the mountains though. They probably wouldn't appreciate that. The takahe live up above the Te Anau caves and that's the only place they've been rediscovered since they were thought to be extinct. Anyway, the DOC website (I think I linked it in the last entry) has more on the takahe, the fiords, and a lot more interesting stuff. I won't be posting pictures for a few days. The only place I can upload from in Te Anau just closes whenever they want to.
