146 miles

Up at 6a to high tail it to Haines. We have limited time and are nervous about the unexpected. We have a great breakfast at the Kathlene Lodge set off for a 130 mile scenic route. This is one of the best stretches of highway yet as it is not impacted by permafrost. The scenery is spectacular and at one point I'm riding next to a bald eagle who seems to be up for a race. Upon crossing back into Alaska we find out that we gain an hour so our schedule has some welcome slack. Haines is a great town and we get some lunch, groceries and I get a long overdue haircut. We board the boat around 2p and set sail for Prince Rupert. We see a pod of Humpback whales "balling" baitfish and all rise out of the water in unison to scoop them up - one of those wonders of nature I guess. The boys have luxury accommodations on the boat and I'm sleeping up on the deck on a deck chair under the heat lamps - pretty plush actually and a great way to travel.

That was a fantastic ride down from Kathleen Lake to Haines, starting with Psycho Gopher dodging, the Salmon Wheels, then the quaint sea side town of Haines.
