We wake up to thick fog have a $60 breakfast and hit the road. We soon cross the Arctic Circle and stop for pics. Stretches of the Dempster are as slick as grease and are negotiated in 1st gear with feet out as outriggers. Road conditions are deteriorating and we meet some riders who say the construction area 60 km ahead is the worst stretch. I lower air pressure, soften the bike and slog on. A couple of close calls and feeling the panniers run up the back of my legs doesn't inspire confidence in my abilities. After 90 miles we hit the construction zone which has just been further saturated by the road crew. We have a group pow-pow and given the road conditions and 70% chance of rain for the next couple of days (we don't want to spend days getting out of here) decide to turn around just shy of Fort McPherson. It's a bummer to not finish the Dempster but we all agree that it's the right call - live to ride another day and all that. We end up riding until midnight to reach Tombstone (30 miles shy of the finish) in increasing rain but are too tired to continue. Dinner is sparse - pistachios, beef jerky and whiskey - actually not bad. We see 3 moose in the lake in the twilight.
