Today we visited UNICA the association for the Brazilian sugar cane industry which aims to improve communication and promote sustainability and competiveness in the industry. The speaker Luanna Maia Oliveira gave us a thorough overview of sugar, ethanol and bioelectricity production from sugar cane in Brazil. UNICA represents 60% of the sugarcane production with mission to promote low carbon energy solutions using sugar cane as a clean alternative to fossil based products. Brazil is the world's largest producer of sugar cane, sugar and sugar cane ethanol.  In Brazil, there is no pure gasoline sold in the country. There is only a blend of gasoline with 18 to 25% ethanol. There are currently 15 Flex Fuel automakers in Brazil with more than 90 models of Flex Fuel Vehicles. However, American cars have used this gasoline/ethanol blend with no reported engine problems. The sugar cane industry is now producing raw materials that can be used for production of tires, bioplastic used by P&G, cellulose, alcohol detergents and other solvents used in cosmetics, perfumes and other household products. I also found interesting that they also burn the bagasse which is the leftover sugarcane biomass and convert it into clean bioelectricity. I can see how California with all their environmental requirements would be an obvious target for sugar cane ethanol. So what are the benefits of using ethanol? You can expect reduction of air pollution, and reduction of the global dependence on oil. The US took a major step in 2011 towards cleaner air when they removed the tariff on ethanol imports.

Another exciting visit was with Apontador LBS holding group, a leading Geolocation company in Brazil. The young entrepreneur CEO Moacir Kang walked us through the business concept. They simply identified a need in the market and moved forward to fill the gap. Their mission is to connect people, places and information to simplify everyday life in Brazil.  The site brings more than 17mil new visitors monthly searching for properties, restaurants and other relevant information. They have Map link which is similar to Google map. Apontador partners with industry giants like Microsoft and already has a presence in three other countries in Latin America, but they choose to stay in Brazil.  The company currently employs about 110 people providing GIS intelligence, real time traffic services and developing new services for mobility optimization for public and local transportation. They plan to enhance their sustainability platform through their smart cities smart road to facilitate carpooling among daily commuters. This presentation also reminds me that there is nothing free in this world. When we download free apps it's an exchange for the right to track us, observe our behavior, collect data and sell the data to those who can use it. Today’s way of life!!!

Last night in Sao Paulo: Fernando made reservation at the Hotel Unique Skye bar. Enjoyed Caipirinhas, listened to good music on the roof top by the pool. Vanessa and I shared a shrimp pizza.  What an incredible panoramic view of the city!!!
