I have been on these islands for over 3 weeks and have spent most of the time on Mahe (pronouced Ma-hay), with 4-day visits to Praslin (pronounced Pra-lyn) and La Digne ('gne' is silent). There is a lot to say, but not much order as to hwo it should be said. I have been wrestling with this for 2+ weeks with no resolution. Therefore, forgive the rambling and the obvious Guyanese/West Indian slant & slang ...

First, I must thank and congratulate my friend, Jenn, for spending 2 weeks with me; bringing all of my "girly" stuff & "roughing" it in 2-3 star (from her perspective; 5-star from mine) accommodations. I had a ball coordinating my lime green jeans with matching 3-inch heels, having a facial wash-mask-moisturize regime, & lavendar bath gel followed by rose cream. Let's not forget the unbelievable day of spa treatments at the Banyan Tree Resort. I may as well have been in Bali. Surroundings were suitable to us and the likes of J-Lo. I support all the wonderful things said about Indonesian/Malay girls and their gift of massage. By the time my masseuse was done, I was ready to move into the place (smiles). Jenn, you are the BEST for bringing me the glam!

Let's start with the obvious ... this is THE place for honeymooners and, during the school holidays, a place for young families.

De People
This is a complete plus for me ... no foreign competition for the many, many georgeous "red" men around. Oh my gosh!!! this is the land of suga' ... de people pretty pretty pretty. West Indian/GT peeps, think of every red-skin person you know w/ light coloured eyes and multiply by 100. Then we add all of that up to get close to the amount here. To add to my weakness, there are more men around here named Andre than anywhere that I've been so far. This is not just the dangling of 1 carrot, ah have to contend with a whole field!!! Fellas, don't feel left out ... women here are equally stunning ... is just that I'm a girl, so the preference is obvious. I have even theorized with Jenn that I believe that all the Portuguese-mixed people from Guyana who left to go to England in the 60s ended up in Seychelles without anyone realizing it. Most of the mixtures look very much like those that you would have found in GT. There is even a man here who could pass for the brother of my cousin, Nigel ... he has become my "Radio" here in the Seychelles (those who have travelled with me to Bequia will understand the reference). One of the things that he does is to climb a coconut tree every other night so that I can have coconut water.

De Place

Similarities to the Caribbean and Guyana:
ˇ All of the flowers and a lot of the plants
ˇ Waters are clear and blue like the Caribbean
ˇ Kreol is much the same (I imagine) as the French Caribbean
ˇ Structures of homes and buildings

In terms of the general atmosphere of the Seychelles, I would say that it most closely matches that of Bermuda.

Differences:

I'm told that some Americans come here, but I have not met or heard one ... y'all don't come here! ... unless you are prepared to disguise yourselves as if from another country - like, let's say, Canada! ... heehee. I have also not met or heard of Canadians being here -but I have been told that "a lot" of Seychellois live in Canada ... Montreal in particular. There is also info from one of my drivers that his Guyanese friends in Montreal are married to Seychellois ... go figure. Gotta seek out these Cdn Seychellois like I did the Vincentians after visiting Bequia.

Restaurant Reviews: These 3 places stood out amongst others

La Digne: The Sunset Café ... Alain owns the place with his brother. The recommendation is obvious when you see his picture - aside from that, the prawns curry is phenomenally good and the atmosphere is really laid back.

Mahe:
Italian Garden Restaurant owned by Italian chefs. I had the best shrimp pasta in a rosé-like sauce. Soooo good and cooked so perfectly that I finished the entire plate - this never happens! Nothing is served that is not needed. For example, parmigian cheese is only served with one pasta dish on the menu. There is no black pepper on the table (or offered), only salt. You know what??? - my dish did not need anything. AMAZING!

Mahek Restaurant in the Coral Strand Hotel - Indian cuisine

ˇ Air-conditioned with soft katak music in the background
ˇ Refreshing cold towel freshener that is lightly perfumed with a familiar Indian incense. You know, the one that you know really well but can't quite place?
ˇ Ordered the chicken tikka masala with dukai paratha & a side of cucumber raita.
o Fabulous, fabulous food ... just right for my Indian food fix! If I rave about anything, it would be the smooth, velvety, creamy, mint chutney. It had the consistency of yoghurt. You know the kind that we get in Toronto that is like watery gravy? ... I don't want anymore of that!!!

I will really miss this place and my new friends. I love it here as much as I do Bequia. Bet you never thought that you'd hear that from me! The only thing that is a 'con' is that it is so far away from all of you ... that and my Bequian friends will be more than a tad upset if I decide to reside here instead of Bequia :) Leaving here was more sad because I know that it will be quite some time before I am able to return ... 2-4 years at the least ... sigh ...
