It was a long day of driving today where the only memorable stop was lunch in Erfoud. We had some delicious, thin-crust pizza. Really, really good! My travel companions took the opportunity to buy a sesh - required head gear for the desert later this afternoon. I was already sporting my brightly coloured silk one from Fes (smiles).

Around 16:00 we came off the main road & drove across the "black" desert on some seemingly arbitrary path to a hostel in Merzouga. Dropped off our packs (we'd previously packed daypacks) in one room of the hostel; tied on my sesh "Arab style"; jumped on a camel & headed into the Sahara across the stunning Erg Cheddi dunes.

Very, very, very cool to ride on a camel :-))

The funniest part, though, is the common comment from us single women that we felt a bit more 'stretched' than anticipated ... LOL ... at the end of the hour's ride. Our camel train ended at a Berber camp. Tents were set-up or us in the style of these nomad people. We climbed the nearest sand dune barefoot & my comment here was that I am accustomed to working my quads, calves, & gluts in the morning, not in the afternoon after riding a camel! We took some cool photos (you'll have to wait for those because my camera was out of commission - no batteries & the spares were left at the auberge (no comments from the peanut gallery).

Dinner was a feast - dish was called Kahlia - a stew with ground beef, green peas, & tomatoes. It was served on a communal plate with bread placed around the edges of the low tables. The very best part of my night was to lay on the carpets and look at all the stars before a completely full moon rose above the dunes. Most of us slept under the moon & starlight. The moonlight was so bright that someone asked that we "turn off the moon" before coming to bed. For me, it could not have been more perfect.
