The train to Meknes was said to be 30 minutes late, but in true African time - according to group members with previous travel experience in Africa - it was 1 hour late. I stood in this very full train for an hour (of a 3-hr ride) before I got a seat as everyone was heading home for the holiday. Because we left late, it was nightfall on arrival to Meknes. Very very tired and hungry.
Hunger led us to a great place that served Rotisserie chicken right off the spit. I was reminded of the place on College St. W where Matt took us for Jerk Chicken at 4 in the morning ... hee hee! Allow me to describe the chicken:
Said to be based in saffron & cumin (I think it's tumeric, not saffron b/c saffron is too expensive to use in this quantity), it falls off the bone in tenderness. Six of us shared 1 whole chicken served on a hugh bed of rice, surrounded by fries, & topped with vegetables. The chicken had a highly seasoned stuffing of rice, parsley & lots of cumin. With 2 salads & 4 bottles of pop & the tip, the cost per person was 20 Dh = $2.80 CAD - did I mention that we were stuffed! Crashing came very soon after the meal.
Photos included with this entry is the courtyard at the hotel that was otherwise comfortable, but not spectacular. The courtyard is almost hidden until you understand that it is usually found in the middle of the building & it is open-air.
