Every year for two weeks the town of Fort Fairfield rolls out its welcome mat and hosts an extravaganza of events under the umbrella of the Potato Blossom Festival. Events include everything from the Little Miss Maine Potato Queen contest to pancake breakfasts, the Potato Derby, annual pie socials, live Irish music, tractor pulls, art bazaars and the massive parade that announces the final weekend of the festival.
The parade is one of the biggest I've seen, and I've managed to attend it on several occasions. The funny thing is that the turnout for this festival is bigger than that you'd find for any annual parade held in Maine's largest city, Portland (where I make my home), which has a population just under 65,000, as compared to Fort Fairfield's population of well under 4,000.
I snap a lot of shots at the parade each year. I'll get them organized and posted in the photo album shortly. Meanwhile, here are a couple of my favorites that I happen to have onhand.
