Sept 4 - Dashed all over the place looking for somewhere we could watch the tennis and ended back in the Hop Store in Antibes. Susan was happy watching her mate Nadal (the Spanish noodle) beat Nalbandian. Back home we settled into dinner and TV.

5 Sept- Same as last night except we went to the local pub (Queen's Legs) where Eurosport showed only the women's matches. Home for dinner and check on the internet for the men's. I'd hate to be here next few weeks trying to see the Rugby and paying so much for a beer to watch. We're told tonight by a Scot we can find the tennis at a PMU on the road to Opio so we'll try that tomorrow and if no luck try Stefan & Jenny's again. Cheaper to take a bottle of wine there than drink at a pub.

6 Sept - Useless morning chasing down the MB workshop in the area ( including 3 calls to London to find an English speaker) then drive to Le Cannet (near Cannes) only to find no availability til next week. We could have called had we been able to find the locations on the MB France web site, assuming we could understand French of course. This meant we now defer our visit to our friends the Mayers until Thursday. When we get back to London I'll get rid of this car and in future get a Ford.

Any way tennis in the afternoon was okay and we'll find somewhere later to watch Nadal play tonight. Hmmm! No tennis due to rain tonight.

7 Sept - Today I left off all my body braces (right elbow and left knee) and again tested my ability to manage playing. After 2 sets we were both spent and went home. Last night I was so sore and again this morning but no worse than when I wear the braces. If this continues I'll not use them in our big matches in Zurich and Amsterdam later this month. It's good not to have to wear them and also the gloves I normally wear to protect my hands from the sun. Oh...you want to know...Susan was gracious as she practiced her new slice serve and I won both sets. Yesterday it was 1-a-piece.

Again, rain so play suspended early and we give up and watch old movies.

8 Sept - Still no repair men here when they were due on Tuesday...so hopeless are tradesmen when they have plenty of work...courtesy only when they have none. The drive to Fayence to visit the Mayers took 1 hour for 58 k when 25 k were on the autoroute at about 150kph. Where has all the traffic come from and so many new roundabouts and so many more homes everywhere compared with 15 years ago when we were in this area last.

On the way back we went to St Rafael our favourite spot from 1996 when Susan met up with me after she had spent a week in Paris while I was sailing with the girls and my brother from Port Grimaud. I note today the French now have ice-cream sold in the form we've seen in Croatia. Puffy!

Tennis is back in NYC so we'll search for somewhere to watch tonight and then tomorrow lunch in St Laurent du Var at our friend's restaurant. No luck finding anywhere to watch the tennis so resorted to BBC radio 5. Susan found this a marvellous experience not knowing we all used to listen to the radio in the old days for all our sports from cricket to Olympics. I vividly recall sitting around the wireless in the kitchen listening to the swimming successes of Murray Rose and the tennis feats of Rod Laver and the cricket of Bob Lawrie, Neil Simpson and the spinner /commentator ???? who recently retired. (momentary loss of memory)

9 Sept - D-day for the 2011 World Cup start. Off to the Hop Store in Antibes for the first match and then to lunch with the Mayers at Veronique's restaurant by the sea.NZ have left themselves room for improvement and they will be happy with that while Tonga will now look forward to the rest of their matches with a chance of winning them.

Traffic was shocking and parking almost impossible so an abbreviated lunch so we could be home to let in the cleaner (who didn;t show like all the other trades people we have expected all week).

Seeing the Mayers has been a treat ( and saves us a trip to see them in Mexico) and eating at their daughter Veronique's restaurant again was wonderful. Great food, though my daughter Stephanie had a bad experience there earlier this year.

Home, we headed off for more tennis (1 set all with Susan winning the second 9-7 in the tie-break). Tonight Susan prefers to listen to the radio coverage of the tennis than go out. So now a rush haircut and soak in the tub and then dinner before packing for tomorrow when we leave for Avignon en route to Zurich.

Today I crossed page 650 of Pillars of the Earth so that was my achievement of the day.

Overall a wonderful fun time in Valbonne somewhat away from the coast.

What no tennis on BBC radio....internet website scores only...what kind of place is this....? Murray won over Isner in 4 winning the 4th in a tie-break...It seems the usual 4 will be in the semis...Nadal, Djoko, Murray and Federer...how boring...lucky the Rugby world cup has started.
