Jul 12- A grueling tie-break in my favour ended a lovely morning of tennis (and my elbow and shoulder) under strong sunshine .
We dropped over to Innsbruck and unless we missed the best, we were not particularly impressed. Perhaps it is a winter town only as it certainly has a great deal more apartments and high-rises than any other winter place we've seen.
A lovingly cooked meal of soup and Thai spicy noodles served with love on the balcony was preceded by a small but tasty repast of crackers and dip and of course an equally tasty chardonnay from Austria.
Home tonight to rest and prepare for a mountain walk tomorrow and to complete reading the longest book I've ever read (850 pages). It has held my interest all the way and I look forward to reading the other 2 in the trilogy "The Century" by Ken Follett.
Jul 13 - Raining this morning and it does not look great for our walk later today.
I finally got the story on the Wadenstrümpfe (calf socks). Way back when wool was coarse and not as processed as today the men found the full sock too uncomfortable to wear they used to cut them off at the shin and wear their leather shoes without socks covering their feet. As their feet became more tolerant of the leather (wet or shrunken dry in the summer) they continued to wear only the calf sock for the sake of it being part of the overall dress with the lederhosen etc. Why their shoe laces are tied on the side at an angle (instead of straight down the upper foot as our's do) I have not found out.
When I think about all we have enjoyed this year so far I feel so lucky. The Australian Open and a big one day match between England and Australia at the MCG in January; The Bangkok edition of the Tennis Matsers 1000 in March; The World Cup cricket in India in April when we were able to watch the final from as close as Agra; The French Open in Paris in May; The quarter final of the FIFA Womens World Cup in Augsburg in July and whatever else remains for 2011.
Our mountain walk this afternoon was a rather short one but very satisfying. Now must do a little more work today and get up to date with emails.
Jul 14 - Laundry, lay about, emails, concerts...a great day. A very entertaining country & blue grass band tonight in English and German.
Jul 15 - Not nice weather again and the forecast for the next week for the places we are headed is rather poor with rain, showers or thunderstorms. Oh well...we've had some great weather here overall. In fact fair weather and amazingly good drainage allowed us one last game of tennis. Tomorrow morning we take to the roads after our very pleasing sojourn here for 11days.
