Where I stayed
Popeye's Beach Resort
Two nights in Belize City was enough. Despite all of the horrible things we read and heard about the city, I didn't find it so bad. Sure, there are rats, poverty, a severe lack of infrastructure, but as far as cities within developing countries go, Belize City was ok. That being said, Belize City wasn't so great either. We took a day to wander around and sample the food but
after one day were more than ready to move on.
A 30 minute ferry sped us out to Caye Caulker yesterday and all I can say is 'aaaaahhhhhh.' The village of Caye Caulker is tiny - the entire island is only 5 miles long and 1 mile wide at the widest point. No cars, no paved roads to pollute it. People get around by foot, bicycle, or golf cart. Little kids run around barefoot and peddling around 2 to 3 on a bike all over town. We scored a room at Popeye's Beach resort right on the water. It's nothing fancy but the views are almost as amazing as the ocean breeze we're feeling 24/7. An extra bonus is that the wind keeps the bugs away! I swam across the split to the north side of the island which is undeveloped for the most part and acquired 4 mosquito bites in about 30 seconds, including a quarter sized one on the side of my face. Nice!
Our first meal was the most simple, delicious, freshly grilled fish I've ever tasted. Tonight we ate fresh shrimp and we're looking forward to the grilled lobster tomorrow. Paradise! I think we're going for a snorkel trip tomorrow to look for stingrays, manatees, and other critters that live in this delicious bathwater they call the Caribbean. Ahhhhhh....

Re: Glad you made it safely!
Sista, we've been trying to Skype you but I think the internet signal at our hotel is too weak.??? Have not had any luck since leaving the mainland. We're thinking of you (and I'm glad you haven't lost your edge. ha ha.) Give the kids a pat and the dogs a kiss from us. :)
It's all part of the adventure!!

Hang in there....I know it gets tough, trust me, I've been there, but remember the experience and take it all in; the good, the bad, the ugly, etc. It will all be worth it!
Take care and say hi to your mom for me.
xoxo,
Aida
