We had less then 24 hours in Marseille, so after checking in at the hostel, we headed straight to Notre Dame de la Garde which sits high on a hill and offers spectacular views of the city.

The guy at the front desk told us the walk would take about 20 minutes, but was up a steep hill and wouldn't be much fun in the heat. I decided for both of us that we would walk. We weren't taking the bus a mile -- uphill or not.

In Marena's words the ascent was "grueling" and she "just wanted to get it over with."

So she ran.

Or maybe a better way to describe it would be a mini-sprint followed by a period of rest during which I would catch up to her at my slow, steady pace and then she would take off running again.

Walk or run, we both eventually made it and the climb was worth it when we got to the top.

After exhausting all of the photo opportunities, we headed down and it was pretty much all downhill from there.

The city of Marseille is... how should I say this... well the streets are quite sketchy and you can't seem to escape the smell of urine.

But we did have a nice dinner in what seemed to be a hip neighborhood for locals. It was the first time we really ate like the French and spent three hours eating and enjoying two bottles of wine. We finally got it right our last night in France.
