Snow and the Sexy Tractor

Of the people that I met, one of the more interesting was Kendon, an australian guy cycling aorund the world. And I really do mean around the world - it's taken him 4 years to reach this point, through South America, Europe and the Middle East, and up over the Tibetan plateau. An interesting trip, and (unlike most of us) actually with some purpose behind it all. Check out the website:
I discovered there was one alternative to the expensive singing street when it comes to nightlife in Lijiang: The Sexy Tractor. A small but cosy Irish bar in the middle of a small town in northern Yunnan. They get everywhere!
I returned to Lijiang for a couple of days, as it semed like a convenient place to wait out my Vietnam visa. Most of my time was spent sitting around at Mama Naxi's, talking to whoever happened to be there, but I did a little bit of walking around as well, and decided I had perhaps been a little harsh on Lijiang. Yes, it is very touristy, but on some of the smaller streets, there was some genuinely interesting crafts for sale, actually being made in the shop. I would have bought one or two, were it not for the fact that after a book buying splurge in Dali, my backpack is now rediculously full. Also, seeing the rooftops covered in snow adds a certain picturesque elegance to it all. For the first time in three years, it snowed in Lijiang, leaving many people temporarily stranded as all morning buses were cancelled. Fortunately, it didn't last, so my plans weren't affected.
