Some reasonable hitching (including a lift from one amazing old guy had lived a very varied life, being at one stage or another a renowned, award winning concert pianist, a pilot flying medical supplies into several Africa countries (he had to escape under cover of darkness when the corrupt government tried to claim his plane for unknown reasons) and currently out of retirement driving refrigerated emergency medical suppplies around Europe) brought me to Brussels, and the first hostel in a little while. If anyone is heading that way, the Centre Vincent Van Gogh is a very good place, great atmosphere and not too expensive for a city hostel.

I wasn't too taken with Brussels, though it was definitely worth a visit. The Grand Place, a square of monumental 18th century buildings alone is worth seeing, though there are a few other places of note, such as the Galeries St Hubert, the first European shopping arcade, all marble and grandeur and the interesting landmark that is the Mannekin Pis fountain. It's amazing that a 18 inch statue of a cherub taking a leak can have become so iconic of the city; I think the Belgians are a little strange. The best reason to visit has to be the two things this country is justifiably famous for - good, strong beer and the wonder that is the Belgian waffle. It's making me hungry just to think of it!
