A short walk from Vianden (only 3 hours!) brought me to the main road running south to north through Luxembourg, and the beginning of my hitch-hiking adventure :) Despite the unpromising start - I had to wait an hour in the rain for my first lift - I reached Maastricht (on the recommendation of a friend), some 120km and two countries distant, with little difficulty, and met some very nice people along the way. Especially the Belgians - one guy even tried to give me some money for the bus onwards! I don't think he quite got the fact that I was choosing to hitch.

Irritatingly, the campsite "in" Maastricht was actually 7km out of town. The one mentioned in good old Lonely Planet (last years' edition) hasn't existed for 5 years. Good to see they keep their information up to date! It being quite late by the time I managed to set up camp, I decided to leave the city exploration to the next day. Not the best idea in the world. The next day was a grey, miserable sunday, and in Maastrict, absolutely NOTHING is open on a sunday. There wasn't even anyone around. It took me an hour and a half just to find a grocery store, bit of a pain as I had completely run out of food the previous day.

Despite the initially negative impression, Maastrict is actually quite a nice city. Historically significant (one of, if not the oldest cities in the Netherlands, as well as being the site of the first signing of the EU treaty) though nothing amazing (at least, not on a grey day), but a good city just to amble around, I spent a nice 6 hours wandering the streets aimlessly. It's a shame the imposing main square was disfigured with a funfair, as it would have been really quite impressive otherwise.

And the sun would come out when I was halfway back to the campsite.
