The flight from Tokyo to LA was a rather ghastly one.  We had been amused by the idea of leaving Tokyo at 4.30pm and arriving in LA at 9am the same day.  But in the event it just meant we got no sleep and felt extremely grotty and jetlagged when we arrived.   This frustrated us as we were spending the weekend with our friends Rich and Sara and we were keen to make the most of it: they have recently moved to LA from London so we don't get to meet up with them very often.

It was great to see them, both looking very well and enjoying life in LA.  Rich was seamlessly fitting into Hollywood with a tan and some most stylish sunglasses. They were perfect hosts and provided us with cheese and biscuits for lunch (nobody makes cheese in Asia) and then let us have a snooze.

The next day we went to Malibu to go to the Getty Villa and its excellent collection of Greek and Roman sculpture, and then lunch overlooking the Pacific.  We went for a brisk walk in Runyon Canyon, a superbly wild park which runs steeply uphill between Hollywood and Mulholland drive.  At the top we had a peerless view of LA and the sun setting over the sea.  The park also provided some excellent LA people-watching; plenty of plastic surgery of course, but the favourite was 2 enormous body-builders holding hands taking their fluffy poodle for a walk.

They also took us to great restuarants and we enjoyed drinking some wine.  Thanks very much to both of you for looking after us so thoughtfully and letting us stay, we had a great time.

You will note from the photos that Mrs Murrell has been to the hairdressers; a tattoo-covered man called Razor cut it ALL off.  It was a much more pleasant experience than initial impressions of his salon above a tattoo parlour had led us to expect, and certainly better than attmepting to have it cut in China.
