Its been almost week since I got back from the blue skies and monsoon rain that arrived in  Tibet about two weeks ago. Beijing high rise backdrop and smog is shock in comparsion with the wonderland of the mountatins, hills lakes and rivers of Tibet. ( I skirt over the military occupations that is highly visible)

I can remember arriving in Lhasa on the 14th May after a 29 hour train, having been stuck in carriage full of chinee all chattering way in the local lingo. After about 20 hours I turned to  alcohol to cope with the stress of their noise! Confined in a 6 berth cabin with foreign strangers is not always fun, especially as I had no fellow travel partner, and after about 7 hours the scenery started to all blend into a similar blur of passing beige hill and stream!.

Finally we arrived at around 10 oclock in the darkened starry filled Lhasa sky, and after being greeted by Tibetans at the train station. Adorned with white prayer scarfs, as they friendly voluntarily drapped  these gifts around my neck, I was taken to a chinese hotel. We went to' the chinese district', as opposed to a 'Tibetan styled guesthouse',in the ever shrinking Tibetan quarter.  I was to become familar with the latter (and a far freindly and cheaper option)' by comparsion. The night I found myself alone as I was actually abondaned by my 'guide'. The next day I work up to a veiw of  snow covered hills of Lhasa.

I had the next four days to organise the begiining of my 2500 km cycle tour of Tibet from the luxury of this 3 star hotel.
