On the shores of Lake Nicaragua. The town is really nice with a colonial market square at the centre and many nicely restored old buildings.
Well, it had to happen eventually in this part of the world. We got robbed the other night from our hotel while we were out. Both of our cameras were taken so the travelpod might be a bit photoless for a while.
So we have experienced the Nicaraguan police system as we got our police report at the station, watching the officer bash away at his typewriter. They were very helpful though so it only took about 3 hours.
Today we went to the nearby town of Masaya and to the very large three crater volcano of Mombacho. The crater that we went to was enormous and looked more like an open cut mine. It was also belching out lots of sulphur gas which was so bad that we wore gas masks. We also went on a trip to overlook the Lagoon Apoyo which is a small lake, near lake Nicaragua, created by, you guessed it, a volcanic eruption!
Tomorrow we will be heading further down Lake Nicaragua to the island of Ometepe, the largest freshwater island in the world.
