Easyjet flight was half empty and well on time, going back was a bit busier but still plenty of space. Bus from airport to town easy and only 1.5 Euros. Met Josefina at bus stop, then breakfast by the river near a big arch (place d'europe).
We walked back along a nice pedestrainised avnue, before dumping bags at hotel. Hotel well priced, great location and good staff - would recommend.
Then city tour, the main square was cleaner then I'd read and had a decent atmosphere even though the weather was a bit suspect. Then we wandered around the old town, saw the cathedral, arc triomph, views across the city in gardens behind arc de triompth, a government building, markets etc. Lots of market stalls about both days I was there, and vibe was generally good, although not really that much to see or do except loiter in the plethora of bars.
3 course chines meal for lunch - 10 euros. Most the places you see here they are happy to give free tap water, and plenty of it. Also no tip seems to be expected which is good.
Sisesta time and then a kebab (chips and drink) for tea again decent value at 5 euros. Loads of kebab shops, fast food eateries etc here, so easy to get a quick eat.
Then went to a few pubs with Josefina's friends from the course. Went to a rock style one near the museum, goodtunes and a small, but varied beer selection. Total myth that France doesn't serve pints - every place we went to here did them, and called them pintes. Prices varied from 5-8 euros though....
Then the rains came, so we holed up, then realised it would not relent, so we dashed to another pub near our hotel. Charlies bar - met a French girl and her chums, they invited us to sit with them and all was good. Again decent beet selection. Compared to English pubs the beer selection was much better, more German in style. I keep banging on ibout it, but it surprised me! I thought I'd be drinking just 1664 like in Calais and Paris! And basically everyone spoke English which is useful for me, but not so much for Josefina as she needs to learn French!
Rock Store club was free to get into, played great variety of music from 50s to present day, wasn't all that rocky. We both enjoyed it. Bed at 5.30am.
Up for check out at 11am, wandered around looking at places for a nice lunch to celebrate Josefina's birthday. Breakfast cherry coke in kebab shop first.. In decent restaurants it's about 15-25 euros for a 3 course meal, we went for a 20 euro menu near place jaques (i think). It was very good, rabbit for starter, then roulade and dessert. Problem was I felt rough so really didnt make the most of it. Josefina did well.
Then picked out bags up from hotel and time to get the bus back. Sad farewells and then flight home.
Would recommend a quick trip here if in the area, and as a weekend trip with cheap airfare too.
