We have been in the town of Horta on the Island of Faial for four days now. We entered the harbor mid afternoon on an overcast day but it was quite warm. We haven't tied up to the harbor as that is 9 euros per day. We have dropped the anchor 50m or so from the harbor wall and are using our dinghy to row back and forth to shore.
This place has a great small island town feel to it, shops open at 12, close at 3 so the owners can have a sleep and then re-open and hour later until around 7. The one travelers / sailors bar is called 'peters bar'. it has a great atmosphere full of people from all over the world fresh in from the sea and their adventures full of stories of their journey to the Azores. There are no tourists on Faial which is a nice change. I have been drinking with the crew of a boat traveling from Antigua to England;
Ben - English / French
Tim - English
Jesse - Antiguan
Today Jesse and i had planned to climb pico - the highest point in Portugal but due to the weather we had to postpone it until another day. So i have spent this week so far relaxing, catching up on sleep, drinking, doing laundry, taking long hot showers & re-clogging my arteries with pizza and fried foods. We have found a sail-maker to fix our sail. We should have it back by tomorrow or monday night.
