2618 NM to Azores... (3012 statute miles / 4848 kilometers)

*during the ocean part of this travelog i will be using nautical miles to show distance*
1 nautical mile: 1.15 statute mile / 1.85 kilometers

We are on day 3 and i think that i have finally overcome the notion of sea-sickness. Apart from a few nauseous moments i havent been too bad. Ive stuck to a strict diet of sea-sickness tablets and non fatty foods, looking at the horizon as much as possible and steering the boat every now and then to take my mind of it.

So we left on wednesday 5th of may on an overcast day out of Ft Lauderdale. The sun was rising and so was my excitement. We waited for the 7am causeway bridge opening and then left the harbor. After a ham and cheese sandwich for lunch the sky was blue and we were cruising at a good speed at 5 knots. By around 5pm clouds were brewing and it looked like a thunderstorm was on the way.

We had originally planned to go through the Bahama Strait and anchor near great Styrup Island but the winds had changed due to the storm so we were forced north. We anchored that night on the ´little bahama bank´in around 15 feet of water. While watching an amazing lightning show i noticed that the water began to sparkle as the boat created white water. Jeff confirmed my suspicion and it was indeed phosphoresant algae which glows if it is disturbed.

I went down into my cabin and slept for around 7 hours or so. I was awoken at sunrise by shouts coming from above, the wind had picked up so we were getting blown all over the place and the anchor needed rising. I quickly put on a pair of shorts and a t-shirt and went forward to rise the anchor. The wind was howling and the boat was moving alot. I felt like i was holding on for my life. I could feel my heart and adrenaline pumping and at that moment i realized that i had come half way around the world looking for an adventure and i had indeed found one!
