Matheran - a hill station for Mumbaikers who want to escape the heat. A table top mountain range affording dramatic views over the plains 800 meters below. Accessible only by narrow guage toy train that winds at walking pace along the sheer slopes and up and through the jungle canopy. A town where cars, motorcycles, scooters etc are banned, and one must travel by foot or on horseback. So far, so nicie nicie
But no one mentioned the monkeys. Big monkeys, small monkeys. Pink faced Rhesus or black faced and flat-topped Hanuman Langurs. But all of them: evil, pocket-picking, food-stealing, drink-drinking, aggressive-grunting, chair-tossing, intimidating, evil b**tards. We did not like them, and they were everywhere.

Nice photos.
Slightly misleading post in that Matheran is not accessible only by train. There is an excellent hill road going up to the Dasturi car park [close to Aman lodge station] from where you can walk or take a horse or hand pulled rikshaw. A mini bus shuttle service also exists between Karjat / Neral stations and Dasturi park. Share taxis are also available between these points.
