After a mammoth flight from Bangkok to KL - this flight could have been one hour but due to our ticket we had to fly to Singapore wait 3 hours and catch a flight back to KL - really not worth the saving! We arrive in another busy hot city, this time seeking sanctuary in a rather nice 5* hotel in the center of KL, with tremendous views over the city stretching into the mountains. Jon and I agree that KL does not have the same instant attraction as the chaos and charm of Bangkok. We headed off on public transport for the much reviewed Lake Gardens in central on KL the bus driver deposits us and another British couple on the edge of a dual carriage way and we made our tentative way off towards the park in the heat of the city.
First encounter with monkeys delights the children, Tabitha is not over impressed by the Malay toilets - Oliver is however very impressed with them.
We hired a car and set off on the road for the Batu Caves and Waterfalls - but somehow missed the Caves, finding the waterfall by chance. More monkey's, these falls are not on the normal tourist route and we are the only Westerns - the local Malay people are very welcoming offering us fruit from their picnics. This is our real first experience with the rain forest - and we were a bit apprehensive the heat, the humidity the insects!
Off to Kaula Selengor to witness the fire flies - we were spending the night at the fire fly resort - which took some finding. We were met with a rather run down gathering of buildings - you would be hard pressed to call it a resort! It reminded us of a tired Butlins chalets only set over a jungle lake. The peeling paint, the faint smell of damp and the decor were laughable.
The whole event was saved by the fantastic fire flies - what a wonderful experience we were luckily enough to go in a small boat just after dark out on the river and see these little flying light bulbs no bigger than a small house fly. The night was clear the stars were bright and thanks to a couple of lollies - Oli was silent. A great experience but DON'T stay at the 'resort'. Opps nearly forgot to mention the cold greesy fried eggs and very very sweet tea for breakfast - which Tabi drank!!!!!
After a rather restless night (kept thinking a jungle monster would take the children away) - we abandon plans to drive for 3 hours to the elephant sanctuary and gave in the children's desire and headed for the manic water-park. Boy oh Boy the Malay people do like noise and chaos.
Our final day in KL we visited the Petranos towers and spent time in the local park - again the Malay people were taken with Oliver's hair and skin but this time it was too much - they grabbed him, stroked him and just kept staring - so we headed for the hotel pool and spent the evening cooling off in the heavy rain and pool.
The hotel made a huge fuss of Birthday girl decorating the room with balloons, posters, cake and card - much to Tabi's delight.
