Where I stayed
Mercure Le President
We pulled up to Biarritz and we instantly new we were really going like the place. It just felt very laid back with cool bars, shops and restaurants. We got to the hotel and we pumped by how nice it was. The hotel was only reoponed a month or so before we got there so everyting was brand new and very modern. After checking in we decided to go grab some food and walk around. We found a Belgian pub with hundreds of beer varieties and great burgers.
The beach here was very nice. There water was nice and blue and the surf was strong. Like all other EU beaches though - the place was packed beyond all belief. There were a lot of surfers, surf shops and topless women. One afternoon when Jen was doing Landry I went down to the beach by myself and struggled for 20 minutes to find a spot to lay down. That lasted for about 20 minutes until a wave came out of nowhere while I had my eyes closed and drenched me. By the time I knew what hit me everyone else had scurried up the beach and I was stuck searching for a spot again. Finally I settled way up the top of the beached pratically pinned to the boardwalk - when you see the photos of the beach (on a cloudy day) you will see how crowded it really gets.
Unfortunately we did not have the best weather while we were in Biaritz but we were able to make the best out of the couple hours of sunshine we got per day and the restaurants/bars in the area. Although we did struggle to get served at a few restaurants. We first tried to get lunch at a restaurant and we told that kitchen closed for the afternoon ten minutes before we go there. Then the next night we decided we would try the mexican right by our hotel but 5 minutes before we left the hotel the sky had opened up and people ran for the restaurants to keep dry...we literally could not get a seat anywhere at 7pm! Although when we finally got to eat we had some really good food.
Not much in the way of sights to talk about here though. The main attractions are really the beach, the people and the ability to just relax and take it easy. We are heading off for a few long days of driving until we get to Paris so this excellent beach town couldn't have come at a better time.
