Continued from Rome...

...luckily since it is offseason we are able to get into St. Peter's square to view the mass. It is hot as balls and as anyone who has been knows knees and shoulders need to be covered. Matt is drenched!!! It was awesome to get the chance to see the Pope but after 45mins of Latin and Italian in the boiling sun with pants and a golf shirt we were praying for it to end (pun intended). Then we go into the country (so weird calling it a country) from the museum. We must have taken about 100 photos just walking through the museum then we get to the Sistine Chapel which is just ridiculous, Wall to Wall (to ceiling) masterpiece. The only disappointing thing was the crowds. If you had that place to yourself you could lay on the floor for days and still be awestruck. While the Chapel is breath taking nothing prepares you for the experience of walking through the door of St. Peter's Basilica. It is something like 6 football fields long and 2 football fields wide. The artwork is amazing, the lighting is ominous and the fact that St. Peters bones are right there along with numerous other Saints and Popes is amazing. It was truly an amazing experience that everyone regardless of faith should experience. The artwork and architecture alone is a religious experience. After that we had to the tombs of the Popes and see the late Pope John Paul II's sarcophagus (while we have broken many rules about photo taking on this trip - this one just didn't feel right). We leave the Vatican and head over to the Pantheon. This is an amazing feat of architecture and from BC and an incredible church (was converted in the first century) but I suggest not seeing anything else after the Vatican because nothing compares. By the time we leave the Pantheon we are mentally and physically drained and are happy to have a quick (but terrible) dinner with some vino and hit the sheets.
