as my brother pulled the car up to the hamburg airport, he pointed to the large fluorescent blue 3-sided square above the airport's name, telling me that it was part of a light exhibition that the city had commissioned for the world cup soccer finals - "Blue Goals", by light artist and producer Michael Batz, and this was one of the large blue goalposts that was added to many prominent locations and buildings, glowing a deep fluorescent blue all around the city. during the world cup, the goals were connected by a continuous goal-scoring laser show that bounced from one to another around the city.

as my plane took off, i was suddenly awe-struck at the beauty that this created from above on this clear night, and was so thankful for my window seat! there must have been at least 50 blue dots scattered around the light-scape of the city, and i could almost picture the laser soccer ball. then, as i was thinking how i had rarely seen a city look so beautiful, i noticed a strangely bright light in the centre of the city. i quickly realized that it was fireworks, an impressive display that went on until after i could no longer crane my neck far enough to watch. fireworks from above look like tiny magical bursts of colour, and as my excitement to return to finland welled inside me, i couldn't imagine a better send off.
