i think it says a lot about my summer that i am in one of the biggest party towns of the world and all i want to do is sleep and read!

well, not quite, but i did spent a lot of my first day recovering from jet lag in the squeaky hostel bed. it was worth it though, as i think i made my quickest transition to europe time yet (it probably helped that i had no hellish 10 hour layovers in heathrow or absurd 5 stop connections this time, direct flight calgary to amsterdam!). when i finally woke up, the rain had stopped and, feeling better but strangely displaced, i wandered around the quaint and quirky streets and beautiful tree lined canals of this city that i have now visited 3 times but feel i still have yet to really experience. i trust that when the time and people are right, i will - it really doesn't feel like the kind of place to do alone...! so i found a really packed, cozy and very yummy restaurant that served all day breakfast (heaven!), and then continued my wanderings. it feels so surreal to be in europe when just a couple of days ago i was surrounded by friends and family. i guess i really wasn't prepared to leave this time, and it is taking some adjusting to the reality that ready or not, i did. i am really looking forward to getting back to finland in a few weeks, it is amazing how much it feels like home, knowing there will be familiar faces and hugs waiting me, makes such a difference.

i chose my hostel because it was 5min from the central train station, which is great, but apparantly it is also pretty much IN the red light district! not really in a sketchy way, and don't worry, no red lights actually in the room i'm staying in, but as i returned last night i noticed that my neighbours were already on duty... so crazy how truly out in the open everything is here. i bought some absynthe in herb form from one of the "smart shops" today, just add it to alcohol for a week and you're good to go, i was so excited! so when i get home i will make some REAL stuff, none of this lame liquor store stuff, van gogh beware!

last night i was chilling outside with a few fellow hostellers, and one aussie nicknamed me crocs after my newly acquired "canada's favourite new fashion statement shoe" (a great purchase though, they really ARE like walking on air, and the perfect hostel shower shoe... sadly they are also probably the most fashionable shoe i have here until i get back to the shoes i left in finland, yikes...) ANYway, this morning i saw him and he had just got a text message from home that steve irving, the crocodile hunter, had been killed! coincidence? synchronicity. meaning...??

now i head to utrecht (only about a half hour train ride i guess) and tomorrow i start my summer school, yikes!
