what happens when you cross st. patrick's day with lapland?
you watch people on skis being pulled by reindeer down the main street in town while dying all of your friend's beer green, of course.
the reindeer races are a rovaniemi tradition that have absolutely nothing to do with st. paddy's day, just a fantastic coincidence! you can even bet on which reindeer will win the final. highly amusing to watch, and i got some great footage. we then headed for irish times, the local irish pub, to continue the festivities. apparantly green beer is a tradition that really hasn't caught on in the rest of the world, and most non-canadians were pretty horrified at the idea, but i think i done quasi and not so irish canadians proud :)
it's one of the great things about being in a different country, you can take the cliched traditions of your home country and play them up way more than you ever would at home, and actually feel original doing it! much fun was had by all.
