The original floating market is in Damnoen Saduak, which is 90 minutes north of Bangkok. I've never been so on our last day we decide to go before flying out. We take our own powerboat, which is capable of very high speed.
People in this town live directly on the network of canals. But many of the homes can be reached by land or canal.
The market itself caters nearly exclusively to tourists, the shops sell a continuously repeated fare of tourist trinkets, crap.
There are cooked foods and fruits as well as items necessary for everyday life, which is why local people might use the market.
Almost all people visiting the market are tourists up from Bangkok, it kind of kills the authenticity of this as a marketplace (I guess it is a tourist market). We eat interesting food including something that tastes like boiled peanuts that is part of the root of water hyacinth or lotus (I can't tell from what is described to me).
