Oct 3, 1:22am, Hotel Madrid, Rm 125

Factoring in my having to buy two tickets plus a taxi fare, my 40 Euro super fast train from Cordoba to Sevilla took about 40 minutes. Pretty cool. But just the same, I think my train from Berlin to Prague was about 50 Euros. The mind reels.

At the Sevilla station I knew approximately which bus I needed to take to get to my hotel, which was the only one I called that had any rooms available for tonight. However, I didn't know where the bus stop was, and by the time I found it, it was after midnight and the buses stopped running. So I took a cab, and I'm glad I did, 'cause I never would have found this place. The map in my guide book really doesn't correspond to the two other maps I've seen of Sevilla. So far, the Lonely Planet maps suck.

But not nearly as much as Hotel Madrid. This place is a dump. And I mean an unqualified, certified, Grade D dump. My first room was right over the entrance, and in fact, the sign for MADRID was glowing out of the bathroom window. I thought that was pretty cool. But then I noticed that there were ants. Everywhere. On the bedroom floor and all over the bathroom. Which I could live with. But when I pulled back the blanket and found an ant on the bed, I had to pause for a moment.

So I turned on the TV, and whatta ya know? Free porn! Hot damn, I can live with ants crawling across me in my sleep if I get to watch some free porn! There were actually two channels: one had three fairly static images of some nudity and some softcore sex while chat and SMS numbers flashed, but the other had full-on, no holds barred sex, also with numbers for chat lines. Then there was actually a third station, but this was a regular old station showing a documentary on Internet porn. Wow. Spanish TV. I mean, this hotel isn't sophisticated enough for those channels to be satellite or pay-per-view. This was just basic cable. Unbelievable.

Well, I finally realized that I should probably go ask the man at the desk for another room, so I looked in my Spanish phrase book and learned how to say "otra habitacion" (other room) and "hormigas in mi cama" (ants in my bed). The only other room he had was only two rooms over, and he said it had three beds and then something about "hormigas." I'm pretty sure he basically said, "So if there's ants in one of the beds, try the other two." Fantastico.

So now I'm in the other room, and this one features a toilet that takes 20 minutes to stop running after you flush, and a ceiling fan that's squeakier then the giant rodents I'm sure are going to come running through here at any moment.

Oh, and the cost for a room at Hotel Madrid? 40 Euros. Which is cheap here, apparently.

So yeah. I'm not sure how long I'll be staying in Sevilla. There certainly seems like there's a lot to explore, but its charms are alluding me at the moment, and if I can't find another hotel (or better yet a cheap hostel) for tomorrow night, I might book on outta here.
