Leaving behind the home comforts at Matt and Imogen's and feeling like we had just left home all over again, we packed our bags and headed to Colonia, Uruguay.

Colonia is a small sea (or river) side town a stones throw from Buenos Aires by boat. We wandered about this very pleasant little town, admired their lighthouse and plaza then ate a mountain of cheese and ham before jumping back on a bus to continue our journey to Montevideo.

Montevideo in contrast to Colonia is huge, full of noisy cars, traffic and people. However we did enjoy a short stroll along the promenade before heading to the port market for sausages and a glass of medio y medio (half sparkling, half dry white wine) at one of the many massive bbqs. Delicious. Reminding Liam of his parents!

We were a little frustrated that whilst we went to Buenos Aires and explored the town, we were not able to see some tango dancing. Therefore when we heard about a place in Montevideo that had a show of local music and dance (including tango) we jumped at the chance to see it. Apparently the Uruguayans believe they invented tango anyway and we were not disappointed with the show they put on.

We visited the teatro solis which is a public theatre in the centre of Montevideo with a beautiful interior, similar to the royal opera house in London. We were also lucky enough to get a glimpse of some of Uruguay's famous pop stars practicing for their evening show. We also had a quick visit to a fountain of love/locks where couples are supposed to lock a padlock to the gates and initial it, which means they will return in 5 years time still a happy couple (fat chance I'm bothering with that superstitious mumbo jumbo, that lock cost me 4 quid).

Next stop an estancia in the middle of nowhere for some peace and quiet....

Colonia gets a thumbs up as does Montevideo (but mainly because of the sausages!!)
