So here I sit on Tuesday re-writing our survey after having listened to about half the focus groups. I heard from Katie, and though she¡¦s not sure when she¡¦s getting back, she wanted me to send her the SPSS data from last year¡K which is great, because to me it is absolute gibberish¡K. And that way, I¡¦ll be able to present on her behalf. Tweaking the survey is good, because I think I¡¦m able to better understand what is necessary¡K and prove that by asking the right questions. These nurses need training. What makes me happy is we will be able to provide at least a little bit of it.

Today I also after working a little on the survey have to figure out how to explain how to do the registration for the surveys and the eventual database. Which is scaring me. Luckily a new friend of mine, Eric, is a software architect (sounds so NYC and alas, that¡¦s where he is from) will be able to give me a tutorial on it¡K I hope. I¡¦m hoping from sympathy from all corners of the world for this one.

Rahel is still having issues with her internship. Apparently the African Union isn¡¦t the best organization to intern for. She talked to Ron yesterday for a long while trying to figure things out. She¡¦s not going to work right now, which means she may come and help do some stuff- I would be thrilled to have her here¡K though I¡¦m not sure what I¡¦ll ask her to do- maybe the database??? :)

It¡¦s weird being here has become really comfortable all of a sudden. Yesterday I bought rope for less than a Birr and spent 45 minutes skipping in my room. Yes I am crazy- but honestly, I need to train for the 10 k run somehow, and I can¡¦t afford any other way. And last nite I painted again, this time, I went crazy and decided to use a whole page of paper- I don¡¦t know if I like it or not- but it¡¦s better than nothing on my white walls. See attached picture, and if anyone has advice for painting with water colours please let me know. I accept any kind of criticism. I have oil pastels, which I am dying to use, but need turpentine or mineral spirit to use¡K I think I¡¦ll go look for them today.

It is weird how much you can grow inside and out of work. Every day I get pretty tired at around 4/4:30pm but when the nurses come back at around 5pm I get excited to see them again. They have such amazing energy- I get mad at myself for feeling tired. Reading off a screen though is really killing me. I also realized there are a lot of people who live here, who can use a little education about things which happen here that they don¡¦t know about. No one believed me when I said FGM rates in Addis were about 70 %... some people actually required me to print out the report in disbelief.

I feel slightly disconnected from Ramadhan this year, though I was expecting the opposite. There is no mosque near here- and it¡¦s pretty dark when I get home, so I am left on my own, to break fast alone f¼ but lately I¡¦ve been meeting the girls for dinner¡K it just makes it easier to get out of the house. And just for Nana, on Sunday night I joined a few friends to watch the Soccer game, Chelsea against Everton? It¡¦s crazy.. how it doesn¡¦t matter where you are in the world¡K soccer truly is the unifying force for so many. It reminded me of the world cup days and our chanting BRAZIL!!!

Anyhow, I should get back to work and developing the next survey/quiz about HIV knowledge.

Oh, Pam has decided to come visit me in December! YAY! And I hope that is incentive enough to those of you out there to book your tickets. I have become really good at squishing cockroaches, so those shouldn¡¦t be a problem anymore. promise!
ciao!
