Today started with terribly sad news from home about grampa so we made a wee detour back to Vegas so mum could fly home and suss out the situation to see if the whole momo-schmidt clan need to abandon our trip too. For now the 5 of us are continuing on our adventure which today took us through death valley.  It's a crazy place alright, the landscape is amazing – huge big mountains, deep valleys and all beautiful colours of rocks.  The road is not for the faint hearted.  One minute you’re driving nose first into a valley 200ft below sea level and literally 5 minutes later you’re heading up roads at 8,000ft above sea level! It was a brilliant drive and only took about 4 hours (rather than the 8 we had anticipated).  We had intended to do the drive in the morning but with the airport detour we actually started late afternoon and that meant we saw the sun setting as we went – beautiful! So apart from the road and the landscape I’ve got to mention the temperature – it’s so hot here that you can feel your skin melt and I swear my eyes started to dry up as soon as I stepped out the car. It’s crazy hot - even the wee wind that blows is hotter than my hairdryer!

As soon as we entered the park we needed to stop for a cool down swim at local hotel pool.   Well I say cool down, but the water was over 30 degrees since it comes from a local spring, but it shows you how hot the air was since 30 degrees did feel coolish at the time!

The babies were great tonight and we finished our drive through death valley at sunset while they slept.  Tonight we stayed in Lone Pine which is real cowboy country and loads of westerns were filmed here. Night night
