Day 1 - morning / afternoon

All night long, the forceful winds kept howling nonstop while constantly hitting the glass windows of my room!  From behind the curtains, I stood in a gaze while watching the intensity of the storm creeping its way through the city streets.   As per the forecast had promised us, "The Perfect Storm" was being delivered by Mother Nature!

Having slept very lightly throughout the night, I still had the energy to get up at 5:30am this morning and rapidly went once more to my room's window to look outside.   The streets were all covered by the white stuff plus to make matters worse, it was still snowing!  Groan!   Hardly any cars were seen on the highways.   Only the brave ones were out there or should I say crazy ones!

Without a doubt, Toronto was hit very hard during the night by the severe snow storm which was probably by now making its rounds in Ottawa!    While hoping that my departing flight of 10:30am this morning wouldn’t be affected by it, I could only wish for the best!

By 7:00am, Michel and I were part of those crazy ones out on the streets being driven in this dreadful weather!   After all, we had a plane to catch but only if we could make it on time to the airport and only if it wasn’t delayed or cancelled altogether!

The hotel’s driver of the minivan carefully drove through unplowed streets at a much reduced speed.   It was better to be safe than sorry because along the route, several cars were seen abandoned in the ditch!

Due to many streets being closed, the route to the airport had to be changed on a few occasions which in the end, made the entire ride a nail biting hour and a half experience instead of a mere fifteen minute one! .  It was a nerve wrecking ride if you ask me in which I constantly kept looking at my watch to see if we would make it on time.

Well, we did finally make it to the airport all in one piece with no major problems to report except that we were late.    By now, only small flurries were coming down, the worst being behind us!     Ouff!

You’ll be happy to know that our flight was delayed for a couple of hours only and not cancelled entirely as originally thought!  Yeahhh!    We were finally here at the Toronto’s International Airport and had survived the entire ordeal!

It was now just a matter of time for the airport’s snowplows to clean and clear up the runways and get the show going once and for all!

While patiently waiting at my flight’s departure gate with Michel at my side, I kept thinking…..Cancun, ready or not……here I come!
