Day 27 - late afternoon
Day 20 - Northern Experience Tour
38 Celsius, cloudy periods, hot
Being fully satisfied of the leopard's sighting, the captain swiftly turned the craft around and began to cruise slowly downstream on the Chobe River! We were now heading back to the lodge but this time, cruising on the other side of the river!
Looking at my watch, it was 5:00pm. We’ve been cruising on the river for almost two hours now! I couldn’t hide my excitement of having encountered along the way so many unique and amazing scenes of wildlife but my thirst of adventure yearned for more!
In the horizon, the sun was running its course by slowly descending towards the ground while the clouds appeared to be taking another shape and color! It was quite apparent; the sky was making provision for a colorful sunset to be delivered this evening!
A group of several hippopotamuses were rapidly detected hiding in the shallow river behind tall grasses and reeds. Only their eyes and small ears were seen above the water’s surface. Some lifted their heads completely from underwater while showing on their faces airs of mistrust.
Whether it was a sign of anger or simply natural from their part I’ll never know but they repeatedly yawned while making loud wheezing sounds and grunts. We kept our distance while observing them with interest!
Suddenly and unexpectedly, a large male hippo came out of nowhere and jumped right out of water within inches of our boat! Water splashed all over us while we jumped in our seats!
Realizing how close we came to having easily been tipped-over by this angry hippopotamus, we watched him rapidly swim away before coming to a complete stop in mid-river! Turning around, he looked straight at us with an air of dominance! It was mind-blowing!
To be continued…..Monique :-)
