Day 16 - afternoon

Day 9 – Northern Experience Tour
25 Celsius, blue sky, cloudy periods

Forms were filled out, documents signed and questions answered.   Michel was waiving all legal rights to the company in case anything happened.   No hint of nervousness appeared on his face; his mind was made up….the show must go on as one would say!

Half an hour earlier, we'd been picked up as promised from our hotel and were driven for a good twenty minutes around town picking up other people.   We were now waiting at the company's office after having properly completed all of the paperwork.  It had a relaxing ambiance, the necessary ingredients required in order to put the fearless people at ease!

And then our turn came up, it was time to leave once more!   With several others, we were jammed inside a van practically one of top of the other and driven outside town followed by a dusty track which led to several cabins in the middle of the desert.   Everyone in the van was joking around, a good sign of being daring and confident!

Once arrived at destination, several people were already on site to greet us.  Michel rapidly followed them inside a cabin where instructions were given, demonstrations made and then long coveralls put over clothes!   Just like that, Michel was now ready to "TANDEM SKYDIVE"!

Yes, TANDEM SKYDIVE!   Call him crazy, call him adventurous, call him whatever you want but he was going to jump today in Swakopmund from a small Cessna plane 10,000 feet high above ground and this....connected to a harness that would be attached to the tandem professional skydive-master!    Yes, exactly that....a very popular method for first time skydivers!   Wow!

Since Alex, our tour guide had never tandem skydived before and since I offered him the opportunity to do so by paying all expenses for him, in the end and after several persuasions attempts of mine, he gladly accepted my treat and joined Michel in this thrilling experience of jumping off a plane!

As I looked at everyone around, I envied them and believe it or not…..was starting to have second thoughts!  Yes, I was starting to regret not having signed up for this tandem skydiving adventure even though Michel did try to persuade me much earlier!   But fearful as I was of being motion sick in this small plane, my feet were better off staying on the ground!   Plus, who would have taken pictures of this historic moment from down here!  Hehehe!

Fifteen minutes later, Michel’s turn came up!   He was the first one to be called to board the plane with Alex from a group of several other people since we’ve told the crew members that we had other activities planned for later in the afternoon!

With "Jack" , Michel’s skydive-master by his side, “Larry”, the personal cameraman that I've paid extra to video tape Michel throughout the jump, Alex and four other people including the pilot, I followed them on the sandy pathway that led around the small plane where one after the other, they were all squeezed in having hardly any room to move afterwards!

Wishing Michel good luck after blowing him a kiss in the air, I watched the small plane run down the sandy dirt runway and gradually lift up into the welcoming blue sky while leaving a trail of smoke behind!

To be continued…
