Day 11 – morning / noon

Day 4 – Northern Experience Tour
Hot sunny day – 36 Celsius.

I sat in the back of the canoe while Michel at the front.  Not that he had any choices about it because actually, he didn't!   I wanted him in front of me to lead the way while I took pictures sitting in the back.   In other words, let him do all the paddling without him knowing it!

The river was calm, so calm that the mountains on each side of it reflected perfectly on the water’s surface.   The vistas were breathtaking.

Huge birds flew all around while many rested on trees along the river’s edges.   Some even stood on rocks in the middle of the river and as we approached them slowly, weren’t even scared away by our presences.

The peacefulness and tranquility of the area was incredible.   Who would have imagined in a million years that one day, I would be here paddling on a canoe going downstream on the Orange River!   Not me!   Plus the fact that I absolutely knew nothing about this river until I booked this tour!

As we proceeded, the mountains surrounding us continued to be amazing.    They all had this unique appearance formed after thousands of years of erosion by being constantly exposed to the extreme heat of Namibia’s sun!   The rocks kind of melted away turning into sand!   Incredible, but true!

We paddled our way to a small secluded beach along the Orange River to relax and for those who wanted, to swim in the river.   The white powdery sand was very hot to walk barefoot on, therefore I kept my sandals!

As we were about to leave, goats came out of nowhere practically running towards the river for water to drink.   It caught me by surprise but after seeing that they weren’t any kind of wild animals, I was fine.

To be continued….
