Day 7 – early afternoon

Always one for a challenge, I was now ready to hike the trail leading way up to 249 meters above sea level just to see the old lighthouse at the top of Cape Point!

Even though taking the Funicular would have made life a little bit easier, of course I didn't take it.    That wouldn’t have been as fun!

It’s just too bad that the weather was playing against us with occasional drizzle, high winds and poor visibility in the far distance.     Regardless, we kept moving at a regular pace stopping numerous times……me only, Michel just kept on going…….to admire the scenic beauty of Cape Point’s rugged rocks and towering cliffs surrounding us!

The old lighthouse was completed in 1859 and stood on the highest section of the peak.   Due to its high elevation, this lighthouse stood invisible to ships during foggy conditions creating in the process dangerous conditions.   For these reasons, a new lighthouse has since been built further away at a lower elevation of 87 meters above sea level.   Interesting facts!

After a good twenty minutes of hiking and puffing, I was there!   I was finally at the top of the cliff and standing next to the old lighthouse!    A few people were already there but that didn’t stop me from circulating all around and taking pictures of the fantastic views below me.

The descent was a lot easier but one had to be careful with the slippery steps….in other words taking one step at a time or your descent would have been a record breaking one!    Ha, ha, ha!

Once down and since we still had time on our own, we decided to hike another trail, this one leading all the way down towards the beach.   This proved to be a fantastic idea because the views were awesome.

However, since time was playing against us and even though we walked at a very fast pace, we just couldn’t make it all the way down to the bottom of the trail and next to the beautiful sandy beach!    After all, we still had to hike back up the cliff and we only had twenty minutes to do so!

It was much harder to hike going up than down!   But of course, this wasn’t a problem for Michel!   Always twenty feet ahead of me and calling after me to hurry up!

It was now time to leave Cape Point and head towards our next destination!   Looking at the skies, patches of blue were now appearing behind those greyish ones!   It was about time!

To be continued….
