Day 11 - evening

Since the sky was slowly darkening making way for nightfall, this meant only one thing!     I had to rapidly find the right alley that would lead me back to the hotel because you see, after a while these narrow passages all started to look the same!    I could only imagine how they'd look like in total darkness!    Ha, ha, ha!

Having spotted a couple from our group within proximity of the Rialto Bridge, I quickly lost sight of them as they disappeared behind an alley!  Darn!   I had the hopes of following them back to the hotel as a reassurance that I was on the right path but that quickly went out the window!

Looking at the small map of Venice that Michel held in his hand, we dove back into the crowd and continued to pursue what it felt by now, a treasure hunt in finding our hotel!     I was starting to enjoy this as many narrow alleys in between tall ancient buildings were passed through as well as dark and deserted ones with many tunnels!     Spoooooky!

It then became apparent that we were circling around these mazes of flooded streets and getting further and further away from our hotel!   We should have been there by now but instead, found ourselves in the complete opposite direction.    Now, where was my sense of orientation, Michel asked me!  Ha, ha, ha!

By asking occasionally our whereabouts and directions to some gondoliers, we continued to wander endlessly in Venice’s small islands but this definitely gave me the opportunity to see so much more of the people and of life around here!   Picturesque scenes were amazing!

On one occasion, a gondolier offered us a boat ride back to our hotel for a special price of 120.00 Euro.   When I inquired how far away we were from it and since his reply was "a mere ten minutes", I almost laughed in his face while thinking “like hell”!  I might have been lost but I certainly wasn’t a fool!  Ha, ha, ha!

And to think that our guide had said that it was an easy task to go back:  just follow the Grand Canal this would bring you directly to the hotel!   Well, let me tell you that it wasn’t as easy as one would think because you see, often the path next to the Grand Canal had dead ends and due to this, we had to walk in between dark alleys just to return to it further away.

These side alleys and flooded streets often went in many directions and not necessarily back to the Grand Canal!  Soooooo……it wasn’t always as easy as it appeared on paper!  But it surely was nice to get lost in Venice!   I definitely wouldn’t have seen as much of it any other way.

So, what do you think!  Did we eventually find our way back to the hotel, yes or no!   And the answer is……..of course we did!  We did eventually find our way back to our hotel!   Of all places to get lost, Venice was the best of them all!  Ha, ha, ha!

Plus guess what!  As we approached our hotel, of all people to bump into, we bumped into our guide Ernesta!   We surely could have used her thirty minutes earlier!  Ha, ha, ha!  It was 6:45pm when we arrived and the sky was now dark!

After resting for half an hour, Michel and I decided to spend the evening wandering along the Grand Canal within proximity of our hotel while browsing at the souvenir stalls trying to find that special souvenir!   In a way, we were now experts in walking along the flooded water streets of Venice having just passed with high marks our first initiation!  Ha, ha, ha!
