Day 2

Frankfurt's airport was a déjà vu from my brief stop here last year while on my way to Istanbul!  Nothing had changed but it definitely brought back memories, good old memories!

Since we had four and a half hours before our next flight out, we slowly made our way to the Lufthansa departure gates and patiently waited like everyone else for our flight to depart!  Michel took fully advantage of this by taking a short nap sitting on the hard leather chairs while I disappeared to do some window shopping.  The worst was done, I cheerfully told myself; I was almost there in Italy!  Yeahhh!  The joys of travelling!

This time around, our seats were almost at the very end of the plane, like….row 34!  This was kind of expected because unfortunately, I couldn’t select them ahead of time!  Oh well!  At least the flight’s duration was only two hours!

It was 10:50am when the plane ran down the runway and into the welcoming sky.  Rome was now within reach, it was only a matter of time......well that’s what I thought at that moment!

We flew over the Swiss Alps which were absolutely beautiful to see from the sky!  And then, green pastures came into view as the pilots slowly and gradually made their descent towards Rome’s International Airport!   Little did I know at that time what was about to happen……

From the air, the plane smoothly made its descent towards the runway.  Houses became bigger and bigger, cars could even be seen; we were within reach of touching the hard pavement, it was just a matter of minutes when…..

Suddenly and unexpectedly a big bang was heard inside the plane and the motors started running louder making everything shake endlessly inside the plane.  Within a matter of seconds, the plane instantly changed course and instead of landing, went straight up, up into the sky to everyone’s astonishment!  We all had this "What’s happening!" look on our faces as we glanced at one another!

By holding on tightly to my seat’s arms, I pictured in my mind the pilots’ foot completely pressed on the gas pedal as they desperately tried to gain speed and altitude while the plane went higher and higher!  It’s funny how one reacts in a moment like this because instinctively, that’s exactly what I did with both my feet!  I pressed hard on the plane’s floor!  Now, was I trying to help the pilots in making the plane go faster!  Ha, ha, ha!

The plane’s captain pilot immediately talked over the microphone and informed us that due to an unsafe position, they had decided to abort the landing.  That they were going to circle the airport and try to land all over again in another twenty minutes or so!   Oh well, better safe than sorry I told myself while thinking “three strikes and you’re out!”

So, here I was stuck in this plane as the pilot circled Rome’s airport in an attempt to land all over again!  Was I panicking!  No, but I did hope that this second time around, that they would succeed in landing safely!  Looking outside the plane’s window, the weather appeared fine; it wasn't as if there was some kind of storm or whatever!

Well, you’ll be happy to know that on our second attempt, we landed safely on the runway with everyone clapping their hands to the pilots’ success as the tires it the runway!  Hip, hip, hurrah!  Well, that was enough excitement for one day I told Michel and to think, my trip was just starting!
