Day 12 - afternoon

Day 5 of Ecuador & the Galapagos Islands tour

Back at the Red Mangrove Aventura Lodge, we had a delicious lunch and after a quick change of clothes, we were off to the main wharf, a mere ten minute drive from here. Not taking any chances, a seasickness pill was taken during my lunch since I didn't want be sick on the speedboat! After all, we were talking about the Pacific Ocean here and the water was known to be rough in many places, I told myself while thinking about my last seasickness a couple of years ago in Peru!   Groannnnn!

Before anyone could board the small cruise boat, each and every one of our suitcases had to be open and inspected by the guard to check if we weren’t bringing with us anything like plants, seeds, fruits or animals that might contaminate the other islands!   Right there, I regretted having brought with me so many suitcases!  Groan!!!

Once all cleared, the speed boat departed at 2:00pm and off we went heading in the direction of Floreana Island, a three and a half hour cruise from Santa Cruz Island.

The weather was absolutely wonderful.  Michel and I having sat at the very back of the speedboat, best place on the boat I told myself, we greatly enjoyed the warmth of the breeze and the heat of the sun while the deafening sound of the motors right behind us as well as its heavy gas smelling fumes from time to time made me regret sitting here after a while.  That will teach me for always wanting the best seats Michel was quick to tell me laughingly!   Ha, ha, ha!

Looking all around me, we were surrounded by water!   We were this tiny miniature cruise boat advancing at an incredible speed in this gigantic ocean!   Wow!  What a feeling!  What a great feeling it was!   In the horizon, nothing was in view except a beautiful blue sky with cottony white clouds touching the surface of the ocean.   It was so beautiful and so relaxing!

After a while and since I didn’t want to have a heat stroke from all of this sun exposure, I left my best seat and went inside the cabin where most of the other ones from the group were taking a nap on the padded benches or simply feeling sick due to the motion of the boat.  As for myself, I felt terribly wonderful having taken my seasickness pill beforehand!   I could have danced right there of the boat deck!  Ha, ha, ha!

Suddenly and without any warnings, we were surrounded by many, many dolphins; there must have been at least one hundred of them who appeared out of nowhere and followed the speedboat.  At this moment, the captain of the boat slowed down a bit for us to enjoy the really good show that the dolphins gave us by jumping all around and doing flips.  Wow!  It was incredible!  They were welcoming us in their environment as we approached Floreana Island!

After three and a half hour of pure enjoyment, Floreana Island finally came into view looking quite mysterious in the distance with its heavy green lush vegetation, elevated mountains and grey clouds guarding it.  It felt as if we were arriving on King Kong’s Island as it looked so spooky and deserted!  In a way, the island was kind of creepy and I soon was to discover its dark hidden secret!   Ha, ha, ha!

Seals were on the cement pier as we all got off the speedboat.  A wooden sign welcomed us to the island as well as showed us a map of the main points of interest!

By now, it was 5:30pm, kind of late in a way but regardless, we headed off to the nearby beach where I had my very first snorkeling experience here in the Galapagos Islands!
