Not too far from the Bent Pyramid, the mysterious Black Pyramid stood by itself reminding me that not all pharaohs were as great as we thought.

Originally named Amenenhat is Mighty, the pyramid earned the name Black for its dark, decaying appearance as a rubble mound.

Construction started in 1860 BC by King Amenemhat, 800 years after the Bent Pyramid.

Around 15 years into its construction, disaster struck and beams began to crush and doorways crumbled as the pyramid caved in under its own weight. Builders did their best to avert destruction, but the damage was done and the pyramid abandoned.  Today, the pyramid is still abandoned and closed to the public.

Seeing the sad dark ruin had its mysterious attraction as I studied its structure from a distance and thinking that without any doubt, while we usually associate Egypt with the three Great Pyramids at Giza, as a fact, there are actually over 100 pyramids in Egypt, many of which, just like the Black Pyramid, are relatively unknown to anyone or in a poor state of preservation or buried by desert sands!  Interesting!

Thankful for having seen the Black Pyramid!

Without articles like this we could not know about the Black Pyramid! It is a petty that it is closed! Nice article!
