Leaving Saqqara, we then headed towards Dahshur located another 10 kilometers further south and 40 kilometres from Cairo.

Dahshur being the home of the remains of several pyramids, the two finest and most complete monuments there to explore were the Bent Pyramid and the Red Pyramid both built by Snofru, founder off the 4th dynasty and father of Khufu, builder of the Great Pyramid of Giza.

Not long ago, the area of Dahshur could not be visited by tourists which explained why it was not a major tourist site and received so few visitors.  As for me, it was definitely well worth the drive and the visit today.

As we approached by van the first pyramid, the Bent Pyramid, a tranquility reigned, we were the only ones on site.  We were greeted by the Tourists policemen who were sitting on camels and holding semi-automatic rifles on their hands.  They were guarding the area.

Making our way by foot to the Bent Pyramid, Karen, Michel and I walked around the structure, the interior being closed to the public.  This huge beautiful pyramid was quite a fascinating structure to see because it raised so many questions about its dramatic change of angle which started at a 53 degree one to suddenly change to a 43 degree angle.  Due to this, this pyramid holds the name of Bent Pyramid and has an unique and distinctive appearance.

There are several theories about this change in angle and the currently accepted one being that the King Snorfu realized that had he continued the initial angle, the pyramid would have risen to an height that would have required enormous material and labor.

Once our exploration was completed, we chatted with the two Tourists policemen who with big wide smiles on their faces, welcomed us into their country by saying "Welcome to Egypt"!   and when telling them the name of our country we were from, they hastily replied "Canada Dry"!    I wonder why?

Thankful for having visited the unique Bent Pyramid!
