Today was a day of extremes!  Yesterday it was 100*F in Death Valley and today we drove through snow!  We retraced our steps out to Beatty, aborting our original plan to travel west out of Death Valley as a result of the high wind warnings restricting travel for high profile vehicles further west and through Emigrant Pass.  We hoped to find the museum in Beatty open, waited for the 10 am scheduled arrival of volunteers only to discover it wouldn't be opening today!  Oh well!

We headed north along Hwy #95 through a very bleak part of Nevada.  Ghost towns abound and the residents that cling to life in these parts don't seem to be prospering.  We had planned to stop and get some pictures of the buildings in Goldfield, a mining town struggling to stay alive but when we stopped for lunch and checked the weather on the Internet we discovered that the bad weather to the west was moving in faster than anticipated.  So after a quick lunch we took to the road again, this time abandoning our backup plan of taking Hwy #6 to Ely.  We decided to make Hawthorne our destination.  To reach there we needed to cross a high  plateau adjacent to a significant mountain range.  Not far into the trip we started to see snow in the mountains to the west and the further we went, the lower the snowline descended.  Then we were into snow and blowing snow.  Not great!

By the time we got to Mina we were out of the worst of the storm.  The campground just north of the town of Hawthorne had a lot of flowering fruit trees in bloom.  I hope the cold weather doesn't freeze the blooms.
