The skies over San Diego had mostly cleared but it still looked dark towards the mountains.  We packed up, said goodbye to our neighbors and headed out.  It seems that the reservoir had doubled in size and the golf course and low lying areas were still under water.  As we left the suburbs of the city we had to resort to the windshield wipers and as we climbed we hit low cloud at about 3000', thick fog by 4000'.  Because we were traveling along the ridge of the mountain range we were in and out of this for some distance.  Not great for scenery viewing.

As we started our descent into the Imperial valley we realized that the east side of the mountains is much steeper than the west.  There is more than 12 miles of 6 % grade.  Don shifted to low gear and never touched the brake!  The speed limit in California for cars is 65 mph but 55 for trucks and vehicles towing but on this grade the speed limit dropped to 35 mph for trucks and we assumed those towing.

As we traveled towards El Centro we noticed signs indicating 'Elevation - Sea Level' and then in the city itself the water tank mark for sea level is 45 feet up the tank!  We've been through this area several times and had never noticed these signs before!

We're back in Fortuna Foothills, a suburb of Yuma in sunshine and are packing for the trip back to Ontario.  I'll suspend the blog updates until we return about March 24.  Be sure to check back.

Bob on

I think we will just quit travelling & follow your blog instead. Way cheaper & you go some cool places.
