Everyone was on the road by 6:45 this morning and Don has permission for us to find our own route.  Once the machinery is moving it doesn't stop all day.  Think about that for a moment and how it must be for the people who are not in motor homes!  They do this because it is hard to find a place that will accommodate the number of trucks and the machinery.

We drove north towards Billings Montana with a short stop at a rest stop to have a quick breakfast and then turned west on I-90 rather than finding our way through Billings and onto the secondary highways that the machinery would take.  The route taken by the machinery has less traffic and skirts the mountains making it easier on gas and drivers.  We found that I-90 was quite busy and has a lot of twists and turns as it winds its way along the Yellowstone River.  We would loved to have visited Yellowstone Park but must leave that for another trip into the area.

We turned north off the interstate just before Bozeman and followed Hwy 89 through the Lewis and Clark National Forest - a wonderful drive.  There is only one mountain pass to cross before we reach Great Falls.  We use the Mountain Directory West to determine whether a route will be safe for travel in the motor home as some of these roads have very steep grades and can be quite narrow at times.

We reached the park about an hour after the rest of the group and, given that we stopped to eat both breakfast and lunch, felt that we had done quite well.
