The rain has been heavy so the decision was made to move on.  It could be several days before machinery can work on the hills and 'dirt' roads that serve as access to the fields.  The soil here is like ice when wet and not navigable until it dries up.

While walking last night we had a neat experience.  We stopped to complement a local resident on the great redo of the front of the building and ended up with a tour of a 'restoration in progress' of the old Strasburg theater.  The old film equipment, seats, etc. have been recovered from their previous life in other parts of the community and will soon serve a high school class reunion.  The Uhrich family have been in the area for many years and are the owners of several properties in the area.  Marlin Uhrich gave us a tour of the Uhrich Locomotive Co. and told us about some of the restoration projects currently in the shop.  His father started the company many years ago and he has continued with this work throughout his life.  It sounds like the next generation has taken the knowledge that would be passed on and has applied it to 'green' buildings somewhere in the east rather than carry on the tradition.

Although Strasburg is not the official site of the 'last' spike on the first continental railway, it commemorates the last spike that made it possible to go from coast to coast solely by rail.  Previously parts of the railway were connected by ferry we are told.  The official marker and plaque can be found along the railway in the town park.

By eleven we were on the road for the long trek north.  Because we do not have a two-way radio we missed a turn and lost the caravan not far out of Strasburg and decided to head for I-25 and reconnect by phone later in the day.  When we crossed into Wyoming we phoned Shelley and discovered that the trucks had been delayed and that we were a couple of hours ahead so we pulled off in a parking area and waited for the group to catch up.  Then on to Casper WY for a night in the Sinclair truck stop before an early morning start.
