Another late start - we're obviously still unwinding after the hassles of the last month.  We were intrigued with the instructions that were broadcast last night to help residents prepare for the unusual cold this area is experiencing.  Instructions included things like 'don't pour water on your car windshield as it may crack', 'put window washer anti-freeze in your car', 'don't leave your wiper blades touching the windshield', 'leave your taps dripping over night' and 'turn up your thermostats to 65 degrees'!  We have to admit, it is cold, even thought the sun is shining.  Daytime temperatures are usually in the high 50's and are currently in the high 30's or low 40's. Nights are expected to drop well below freezing for the next couple of nights.
We spent the afternoon touring the heritage part of Charleston.  What an interesting city!  We were standing on a street corner trying to orient ourselves with the map from the visitor's centre and one of the local residents stopped to help us.  He ended up giving us the benefit of his knowledge for the next two hours.  Along with the history lesson he provided, we were able to gain some insight into the day-to-day culture of the city.  A great experience!  However, although there are obviously many moneyed people in this area, one report we heard indicated that unemployment is at 17%.   Our hope is to come back and visit some of the museums etc. but given the weather forecast we will have to see whether it is during this visit or not.  For now, we'll let the pictures speak for themselves.
