Jekyll Island RV Park

Today we packed up to move on with the intention of stopping somewhere close to St. Augustine FL.  Last night, sitting in the car outside the admission office to pick up the WiFi, our on-line search indicated that parks close to St. Augustine may be full or very expensive.  So far we have been doing well deciding by mid-afternoon where we would stay but, as we get further south, I think this pattern may have to change.  Shortly after departure this morning, we confirmed that a park on the beach in Jacksonville FL, recommended by some neighbouring RVers, had space available.  If our stop at the Florida information centre at the  stateline confirmed that this was our best bet, it would be our target for today - a easy 2 - 3 hour drive.  However, we didn't get there.
Jekyll Island beckoned and then held us under its spell.  What a beautiful community!  Seeing these places 'out of season' certainly has its advantages and disadvantages - on the good side we get to see it without having to fight traffic, crowds and commercialism.  On the down side the museums and heritage homes are often closed for renovation and maintenance and the winds are cold right now.  Today, after leaving the RV in a beach parking lot, we toured, on foot, the heritage park that features the 'cottages' and 'clubhouse' of the millionaires who enjoyed the winter season of this island during the early part of the 20th century.   The rest of the afternoon was spent driving a circle island tour by car.  By the time we passed the campground on the Island, the walking and cold air had worked its wonders on us and the thoughts of hooking up the car and heading further down the highway today held little appeal.  As a result, we're spending the night on Jekyll Island.  Thanks Ruth for the recommendation!
